How do you know if you need reading glasses?

15.04.22

Most people associate reading glasses with a certain age group, and you’re not wrong. As we age our eyesight gradually deteriorates, and at some point, we will all need a little extra help when it comes to clearer vision.

However, deteriorating eyesight can happen to anyone at any age, and in a world where we depend so heavily on our devices, it’s important to look for the signs early and make sure you take the proper precautions.

How to choose reading glasses strength

Various factors often scare people off when looking for reading glasses. One of the main issues, particularly with over-the-counter glasses, is you aren't getting the right magnification.

Magnification plays a huge role in how clear your vision will be, along with preventing headaches and eye discomfort.

Finding the right magnification for you will depend on how serious your vision problems are. To understand how magnification works, it’s important to understand how it is measured. You will often hear the degree of lens magnification referred to as the “reading glass strength”. Reading glass strength is measured in units that are called diopters, and usually go from 0.5 - 3. However,
most retailers, including the Baxter Blues Reading collection, range from 0.5 - 2.0 in strength.

If you find you only have mild issues with close or blurred vision, you will probably lean more towards a magnification of 1.0 – 1.5. For anyone who finds they’re on the more severe end of the scale, we would suggest a 1.5-2.0.

Keep in mind that every individual is different, and this is just a guide. If you’re unsure it’s best to head to your local optometrist and do a simple test, or even try out some of the different strengths in store.

How do reading glasses work?

Reading glassses are designed to treat a vision condition called presbyopia, which affects your ability to focus on nearby objects. It usually occurs when trying to read books or text on screens.

Reading glasses use a convex lens that magnifies objects and text. The magnified lens enlargers the object or text, taking the strain off your eyes, and creating a clearer more focused visual.

How do I know if I need glasses?

Great question! There is no point investing in anything if you aren’t sure, you need it, or if it’s not benefitting your health.

The most common signs you may need glasses are:

1/ Finding it hard to read the smaller text in books or on your digital devices.
2/ Getting regular headaches whilst reading.
3/ Finding that you need to hold books and screens close to your eyes to be able to read clearly.
4/ You suffer from tired, sore, and watery eyes when reading text.

If you feel like you suffer from any of the above, even if you still find it easy to read smaller text, these may be early warning signs that you need readers. It’s never a bad idea to head to your local optometrist to get an eyes test just to be sure.

If you do find you do most of your reading online on a digital device, we would recommend getting reading glasses that also filter out blue light. Baxter Blue readers are designed to give you an extra hand when trying to read smaller text, whilst also protecting your eyes from blue light.

All Baxter Blue Glasses have a blue light pigment technology embedded right into the lens, filtering out as much as 80% of the highest energy wavelengths known to cause digital eyestrain. They also have a premium, anti-reflective coating that eliminates 100% of glare, your eyes don’t have to work so hard.
